HOW I’M MAKING PEACE WITH AGING AT 66
Aging is such an interesting thing, isn’t it? Some days I feel strong, grateful, and very much myself. Other days, I look in the mirror and think, “Wait…. when did that happen?” Can you relate? This has been a topic I’ve thought a lot about, and I recently shared another blog that relates closely. You can read that blog HERE. At 66, I’m learning that feeling good about aging isn’t about doing one big thing. For me, it’s more about the small things I do consistently that help my mindset and my energy.
The more I talk about this topic of aging, the more I realize how many of us are feeling the same things at this stage of life. It’s a real concern, and I think we all handle it differently. Some seem to live through it with more ease than others….. I believe a lot of that comes down to our overall approach to life. I wanted to share a few things that have helped me feel better, more focused, and more like myself in hopes that they might help you too, or at least give you a few new ideas to try.

ENDING THE DAY WITH A WALK
FIRST, one of the best things for me has been taking a short walk at night, usually sometime after dinner. It doesn’t have to be long…. usually 15 or 20 minutes is all. But I’ve felt benefits like better digestion, and like I ended the day in a good way. And if you’re one of those that has a hard time sleeping (I’m so lucky in that department), a walk will help you sleep better.

WATER INTAKE IS CRUCIAL
SECOND is making sure I’m drinking enough water. My goal is eight glasses a day, and when I miss my goal, I can really feel a difference. When you’re hydrated, you just feel so much better overall. That was hard for me to believe when I was younger, but now that I’m older, I realize how essential it really is. Water affects my energy, my skin, my digestion, and even my mood. It’s such a simple thing, but for me, getting enough water every day has become one of the easiest ways to take better care of myself.

DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT
THIRD is something a little different. Sometimes for me, getting out and doing something out of the ordinary is such a boost. Making time for friends is even more important now than ever. This can get really hard for me, because I’m so busy working all the time….. I love my work, but it sure can get in the way! My mama had such a beautiful group of friends up until the day she passed. Going to a movie, trying a new lunch spot with a friend, or taking a different walking route, is a real uplift. A simple change of scenery can be such a great distraction when I feel stuck in my own head.

THE POWER OF GETTING ORGANIZED
FOURTH is getting a little more organized. Cleaning out a drawer or straightening a closet shelf, or getting rid of a few things in my closet…. seems so irrelevant, but gives me the best feeling. Why does this help me so much? It helps because it makes me feel more in control. If my surroundings aren’t organized, I’m honestly a mess. Something this simple gives me an amazing sense of accomplishment.

A SIMPLE TO-DO LIST
FIFTH is making lists and checking things off. I just do this on my phone in my REMINDERS. I’ve always been someone who feels better when I have some structure to my day…… that came from my parents. They taught me the value of staying busy, being productive, and taking care of what needs to be done. At this age, it can be really easy to let time slip away without accomplishing much, so having a simple task list keeps me focused. Sometimes it’s just an errand, or a phone call, or putting away a pile of laundry. Just whatever thing you keep putting off. It’s extremely motivating.

And finally, this goes without saying…… but I still believe in getting ready for the day. A little makeup, a cute outfit, WILL help you feel pulled together. It can literally change everything.
__________
Getting old isn’t for sissies….. my dad used to say this all the time. I’m learning and realizing more and more that small, intentional habits can help me feel more peaceful, more confident, and just better about the whole aging thing!!

Great post! I do most of these things. too, and they make me feel better (added benefit: the house looks great!). I especially like the doing something slightly different. That can make a big difference to me!
Beth thanks for stopping by. I think it’s just really surprised me how SIMPLE something can be to have such an impact. I guess that’s a good thing, right? So often we think we have to make these insurmountable changes in order to feel better, and most of the time that’s just not the case! Have a WONDERFUL weekend Beth! XO
Shauna,
I love this post so much. Your advice is spot on, and I appreciate that you put these suggestions out there. I think that trying new things is critical, and movement is essential. You continue to inspire me, and I’m so glad that you’re out there! Keep doing what you do.
Kay THANK YOU! Your words are so encouraging. I was driving home this afternoon from visiting my family and talking to a fellow mid-life influencer on the phone. We talked about this very thing, of staying engaged with friends and family and staying curious! It is so important, isn’t it? I really appreciate hearing from you Kay, it means a lot! Take care! XO
I just turned 79 and starring at 80 in the near future. Ever since I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, I have kept a todo list on my calendar. It’s so rewarding. To check those off. Sometimes I don’t get them all done but usually I do. Plus it keeps track of what’s been done when. Have never had a problem with enjoying water or other useful liquids. Went on Mediterranean diet several years ago and lost 15 pounds and kept them off. Now I would like to lose 5 more and be at my goal. Slow wins the race. My friends are always trying new restaurants. My partner, Gary, and I take rides in the country enjoying the beauty and wildlife. Love to listen to music of all kinds. Love to knit. Love sports of all kinds. Not participating just cheering. Have a large extended family and travel to see them. The hardest thing I find is making myself exercise. It was not stressed as a child. I’m a klutz. So I now have decided to do a little bit all day. It works for me so far. So sorry for the long post. It makes me feel strong and well to read what I do. Sometimes I think we often ignore what we do every day. I still cook lunch with meat and veggies that requires shopping, cooking, cleaning up, etc. even use iron skillets. Enough about me. Thanks for all your words of wisdom.
Linda this is AWESOME! It sounds to me like you live a very fulfilled life! BRAVO!! All those things are so important to our overall well-being.
