PACING YOURSELF THROUGH HOLIDAY CHAOS

As the year winds down, and the holiday season begins, it brings with it a whirlwind of festivities and tasks. From Halloween to New Year’s, the biggest holidays line up, creating such a busy and sometimes OVERWHELMING time. To make the most of this special time, it’s crucial to PACE YOURSELF. Here are my five essential tips and practices that help me stay on top of things.

1- MAKE SLEEP A PRIORITY… In the midst of holiday chaos, it’s tempting to skimp on sleep. However, this can lead to fatigue and stress. Aiming for 7-8 hours of rest each night is probably hard for most. I like to try and get between 6-8 which is a little bit more reasonable. If that doesn’t work for you, then try and make up your sleep the next day or two. This will ensure you have the energy and clarity to enjoy the season. Sleep is MORE IMPORTANT to your health than you may realize.

2- ORGANIZATION IS KEY… I stay as organized as possible with a to-do list, calendars, and simplifying. Digital tools at your fingertips can be helpful, but you may be old-school and need a planner. Find what works best for you. By having an organized approach, it will reduce your stress levels and help you savor the moments!

3- NOURISH YOUR BODY… Holiday treats are all round us, as you know. By maintaining a balanced diet you will feel better. You can have your treats in moderation, but pair them with fresh cut fruits and veggies. Add in your lean proteins which will help you feel full. Cut back on the sugars and carbs, and for me….. I never drink my calories. Water is always my first choice! I’d rather have those calories in a treat, quite honestly! And staying hydrated is so key in maintaining your energy and mood.

4- MAKE TIME FOR EXERCISE… Exercise often takes a backseat during the holidays for many, but it is ESSENTIAL for stress management. I can’t emphasize this enough. Commit to at least 30 minutes of exercise MOST days. Unquestionably, anyone can do that! Whether you prefer the gym, outdoors, classes, apps, a friend to go with….. MAKE IT WORK. You will thank me later! You will be in a better mood for everyone!!!

5- MANAGE EXPECTATIONS… Let go of the need for perfection and set realistic expectations for not only yourself but for others. The holidays are about spending time with loved ones and creating lasting memories. Particularly accept that things may not always go as planned, and you’ll find greater enjoyment throughout the season.

    ____________

The holidays are about JOY, CONNECTION, and LOVE. By pacing yourself through holiday chaos, and following these five tips, you are ahead of the game. Remember….. prioritizing sleep, staying organized, nourishing your body, making time for exercise, and managing expectations, you’ll be in the best position to savor every moment. The holidays are a time for celebration and feeling gratitude for all we have. By TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF, you’ll create a better atmosphere and mindset so you can get the most out of this magical time of year!

    1. Hi Shauna, Great advice! They seem so basic but it takes some focus and self-discipline to follow. And good idea to put those steps in place now….and not right before Thanksgiving! Good habits take time to develop.

    2. Shauna,
Excellent advice ! Sleep is so important. I notice on workout days if I have had a good nights sleep my workouts are great, but if for whatever reason I haven’t slept well then workouts are slower.
And water also good for the skin, stay hydrated.
I finally had a chance to try your peanut butter and grape sandwich, delish .
