SMALL TOWN AMERICA BY TRAIN

Birthdays are often filled with anticipation and excitement….. what will it be? However, the older we get, I think it sort of becomes less about your birthday. But when your husband plans something fun, different, and checks your schedule, it MEANS THE WORLD!!! I was definitely surprised and appreciated his precise planning.

Our journey through the heart of small-town America was absolutely perfect. Road tripping from Southern Utah, to Cottonwood, Arizona was quite LONG, but all worth it. This town definitely had the charm you’d wish to see in any small town and very unexpected discoveries.

JEROME IS KNOWN TO BE A GHOST TOWN

Although we stayed in Cottonwood, the first night we visited the ghost town of Jerome, right next door. Nestled in the rugged landscape, reminded me so much of Park City. Lined streets with historic buildings and colorful store fronts was adorable. Jerome has all kinds of intriguing tales of the past, which would be fun to delve into.

We chose to eat at a very colorful Mexican restaurant called Vaqueros Grill & Cantina. The vibe was so up my alley, and the food was excellent too. We will definitely go back again next time we visit. Also if you ever go, don’t forget the local candy store, Rickeldoris.

COTTONWOOD HOME TO VERDE CANYON RAILROAD

The next day we spent in Cottonwood, another small town with much to offer. We had a delicious breakfast at WILD PLUM CAFE on Munras Avenue. But the highlight was a scenic train ride through VERDE CANYON. As we traversed the winding tracks, we were treated to beautiful views of red rock cliffs, the Verde River, and plenty of snacks and drinks. Being out in nature all afternoon is so therapeutic. The air was cool, but with the proper jacket and sun shining, it was actually perfect. Another thing I really loved about the ride was all the commentary from the two guides on our car. They shared all the fun facts about the area.

ALL ABOARD!

But perhaps the most meaningful aspect of our journey was the time spent together, away from normal routines….. I’m the worst sometimes at relaxing! My husband is very intentional about what he plans for us to do. I appreciate that about him more than he’ll ever know. It’s the time, right? Time spent with your favorite people is sure to bring the most happiness for sure. And visiting small town America by train, was the perfect way to do that.

____________

So what I came away with from this little getaway, was that every effort you make towards someone whether it be a spouse, friend, or relative makes a difference! I think it’s sometimes easy to think your birthday wish to someone won’t matter. Going the extra mile for someone’s birthday plans, will definitely be appreciated! EVERY EFFORT matters! My birthday was an open road adventure that began with a long car ride and ended the same, with LOTS OF FUN TIMES in-between! Thank you to all who sent me birthday wishes through my social platforms!!!!
