In My Daddy’s Garden In His Daddy’s Hat

In my daddy’s garden, in his daddy’s hat! Yes that’s exactly where I went one evening this week, while I was visiting Salt Lake. Since moving away from my home town after getting married, when I visit it’s been fun staying with my mom in the house I grew up in, from the age of two!

Since my dad’s passing last September, she has been going through all of his things. One by one she carefully has made sure that we all know what’s out in his shed, and in his closet and drawers, and has given us all the opportunity to speak up for any of his treasures. It’s been hard living away, because I haven’t been able to physically see them. But sometimes pictures have been sent back and forth for me to see and be a part of.

While I was there, she took me out to his shed to look. Within a couple of minutes, I saw a cool looking case. It was a hat box, with my dad’s dad’s black hat inside. This hat was one that my grandfather wore on his mission way back when! WOW, what a treasure! Well….. you know my LOVE for hats, and I immediately fell in love. The box had my sister’s name on it. I felt a little sad that I hadn’t ever seen it before.

I thought it would be cool to take a picture in the hat. This is a hat that I honestly would wear, even today. It fit like a glove and I’m SO HAPPY that I was able to get a picture of it with it on! Priceless! If only that hat could talk….. right? The stories it could tell!

Before I left, my mom told me that if I wanted to I could go put my name on the hat box as well. She hasn’t decided who will get it, and even said that it was a man’s hat and that maybe my brother’s would want it. I’m secretly hoping that none of them will. 🙂

I’m so lucky to have had the chance to be in my daddy’s garden in his daddy’s hat! I hope to some day be able to wear it again!!! I have missed my dad. And as pictures of his things have come to me via text, it’s been fun to remember what he liked and what he spent his time doing!

  1. Love it! I have everything crossed (except my eyes) that you end up with that hat!!

  2. You look so cute in your daddy’s hat. What wonderful memories to share of our loved ones! I am hoping you get this treasure!

  3. This was adorable! You look so sweet in your granddaddy’s hat, it was made for you! Daddies sure hold a special place in our hearts❤ I miss mine everyday, he’s been gone 43 years.

  4. Super cute! I have always loved hats and about 10 years ago I began wearing them nearly every time I’m out and about. ALSO, I also enjoyed the post that goes along with this picture. I enjoy reading what those who seem(ed) to have good relationships and memories of their fathers sound like when they share even the smallest detail about them. My own recollections of my dad are extremely disturbing to those who know even just one thing about his behavior towards me; mentally, physically, and emotionally. It was perfectly normal to me, as that was all I knew, so emotionally I’m numb regarding my dad. Which is probably why it makes me feel good inside to hear/read about those who experienced what I view as “normal”. This was one of those posts that bring joy to my heart. Such a nice way to start my day!!! Thank you!!!
