HOW TO WEAR GINGHAM AT MIDLIFE ~ IN A MODERN WAY
Is there anything more nostalgic than gingham? This checked pattern instantly takes me back to my childhood. I thought this pattern would die off after last summer, but I’m seeing it even more now than when I first wrote about this trend last year. It’s one of those prints that feels so summery….. but it can also go a little too country, too cutesy, or even a bit frumpy!

For me, the key is choosing gingham or checks in pieces that still feel modern and wearable. I love the nostalgia of it, but I don’t want to look like I’m dressing from another decade either. A great pair of checked pants, a cute skirt, a simple top, or even just a fun accessory (like THIS HAT) can let you wear the trend without overdoing it.
What I like most about gingham is that it doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, I think gingham looks best when the rest of the outfit is kept simple and clean. Let the checks be the fun part. So yes, this print is still very much in.
With the 4th of July celebration coming up, I thought this would be a good time to share some fun ideas. Let’s take a look at some ways to wear it that feel modern, interesting, and perfect for the middle-aged girl.
CURRENT WAYS TO WEAR CHECKS
LOOK ONE: This BW CHECKED DRESS is a beautiful classic. I’m thinking I might need it! I’ve styled it with some very casual SANDALS, a beautiful white HANDBAG, some super chic SUNNIES, and very fun beaded white EARRINGS.
LOOK TWO: this look is pure fun. The sporty PANTS are very affordable. I liked them with a simple TANK, a great pair of SUNGLASSES, casual SANDALS (or sneakers), and a contrasting bucket HAT.
LOOK THREE: this checked BLOUSE is adorable, and paired with the trending longer DENIM SHORTS, colorful SANDALS, and whimsy EARRINGS…. definitely summer ready. This blouse would be really fun with white jeans or maybe a red skirt. I especially love the Peter Pan collar. I would BELT the jeans for more of a finished and polished overall look.
LOOK FOUR: this DRESS reminds me of something from the 60’s. It’s a simple…. but not simple dress in colorful red and pink checks. I kept everything else very subtle with such a bold print. Style it with a white BUCKET HAT, pink SUNNIES, white SANDALS, and a colorful BRACELET.

LOOK FIVE: I had to show you how I would style the BLUE CHECKED BUCKET HAT…. after all it’s now in my arsenal, and I can’t wait to wear it! The RED PANTS seemed just right, with a graphic TEE, FLIP FLOPS, and bold WHITE SUNGLASSES. If this doesn’t say 4th of July celebration……. I don’t know what will!

Dear Shauna,
I always enjoy what you have to share so much.
I think the life lessons that you learn as you advance in age are the most meaningful to me. I think your insights into human nature have meant the most to me.
One of my favorite subjects that you spoke about was feeling your age physically and perhaps maybe mentally too. Being honest about what was going on with you made me feel as though I was sitting across the room from you having a wonderful down-to-earth gal pal chat. I always look forward to hearing what you have to share and say each week.
Hi Katherine….. I’m really finding that it’s topics about REAL LIFE that are the most impactful! My Substack profile is called THE REAL THINGS. I’ll link it below. But thank you so much for your input. It gets hard…. the aging thing, and if I can support others by talking about it, then I’m IN! Have a wonderful week and let’s chat again!
