THE SECRET TO LOOKING EXPENSIVE

If there’s one thing that has surprised me since starting CHIC OVER 50, it’s how much I’ve fallen in love with mixing high and low fashion…. blending investment pieces with fun affordable finds. There was a time in my life when I could buy whatever I wanted, and that often meant high-end clothing. But as so many of you began asking for more budget-friendly options and accessible brands, I leaned into that challenge. And to my surprise, it’s been incredibly fun. Styling lower price points alongside timeless staples has stretched my creativity….. and yes, saved me some money in the process! Looking expensive isn’t about spending more, but about styling smarter. Here are my tips…

Unquestionably, the fastest way to look elevated is to wear colors that flatter your skin tone. When you consistently wear and shop for shades that brighten your complexion, you will instantly feel and look better. And not only that, you feel more energized, and that mood lift naturally translates into confidence!

Before buying anything new, ask yourself…. can I style this at least three different ways with what I already own? Looking expensive isn’t about wearing the newest thing. It’s more about looking intentional. When you can style a piece multiple ways, it signals that your wardrobe is curated and not impulsive. That reads polished which reads expensive! THESE JOGGERS are so easy to style!

Nothing diminishes an outfit faster than wrinkles and unkept clothing. It’s one of my biggest pet peeves! Steam it. Press it. Hang it properly. Crisp fabric automatically will give you a more sophisticated and chic look. THIS ONE works as a travel steamer and can also be used on a flat surface.

Head-to-toe one color creates a beautiful streamlined silhouette. And it doesn’t have to look boring. Monochrome outfits look deliberate and super refined, even when the pieces are affordable! Check out these looks here……..

Indeed tailoring is everything. Pants that skim (not squeeze), jackets that define the waist, sleeves that hit correctly…. proper fit elevates even the simplest pieces. And yes, you can absolutely wear the oversized pieces and still look sharp. It should feel structured, not sloppy. Pair a relaxed blazer with slim trousers. Or a roomy sweater with tailored denim. And what about wide-leg pants with a more fitted top? Balance is what keeps it chic. Without a doubt an oversized look can be refined, and that’s where the “expensive” comes in. Notice how these two looks are totally balanced. An oversized piece with a more fitted piece. Fantastic!

Never underestimate the power of accessories. The right details can take an outfit from a one to a ten with very little effort. A scarf around the neck, nice handbag, classic belt, beautiful jewelry, or a great pair of shoes will elevate the simplest look. Not only should you not go half-way with your look…. you should reach for the finish line with accessories!

Finally, remember that looking expensive isn’t about labels or luxury price tags….. it’s being intentional. When you shop your best colors, style pieces multiple ways, keep your clothes crisp and neat, embrace monochrome, and prioritize fit….. your wardrobe suddenly feels right. These small, thoughtful choices create sophistication, confidence, and more fun. And the best part? You don’t have to spend more to achieve it. True style at this stage of life isn’t about the excess, but about knowing who you are. Dressing with purpose and wearing it all with quiet poise.
