EXODUS ADVENTURE TRAVELS | GREECE TREK | PART II

Continuing on with part II, of my amazing trek through Greece with Exodus Adventure Travels. Part I is HERE. As I said earlier this trip was such a beautiful way to travel through Greece. Without a doubt, there would have been no other way to see the things that we did without trekking. It was challenging at times, and you DO have to be in good physical condition. However, our guide kept a moderate and steady pace, with lots of breaks and a stop for lunch. It’s a very doable trip for most people.

It’s important to note that this is a trip that brings income and opportunities to the communities through the inclusion of locale owned hotels, restaurants, and other businesses. They also strive to have their guests experiment locally produced food whenever possible. And in addition to this, the hotels that Exodus Adventure Travels uses, are family owned by islanders. This really ensures that you get an authentic experience.

DAY 5) We took the ferry first thing, to Paros, and then a bus to the heart of the island and village of Lefkes. Our first stop was the Byzantine Cathedral of Ekatontapyliani. Have you ever heard of a longer name for a church? It’s one of the best-preserved Paleo-Christian monuments in Greece. The tokens hanging by the altar, representing significant moments in the parishioners’ lives, impressed me. They sell these tokens each year to help support the orphanages. Another thing that stood out to me was the baptismal font. It’s the oldest font in the world. It miraculously survived the island’s raids because they used it as a trough for their horses.

We then began our trek that day along the Byzantine path that runs all the way to the east coast of Paros. The trail is over 1000 years old, and surrounded by beautiful scenery…. even fresh herbs of oregano and sage. Indeed just the smell of these plants was wonderful. There was marble stone all around us from the Naxian quarries, which we got to look at up close. We stopped in a little village for a homemade lunch, prepared so thoughtfully for us. The ambiance was absolutely charming! We then caught the ferry back to Naxos.

DAY 6) Our day was spent in Naxos, with a walk exploring the main town of Hora. Unquestionably the cutest markets offeringing up all of the best of Greek goods. Indeed the best olives and olive oils, jellies, honey and walnuts, and colorful dish-ware. Apart from this we sampled some delicious local candy. I loved seeing the quaint churches everywhere along with charming cafes.

LOOK WHO I RAN INTO IN NAXOS!

Sitting proudly in Naxos, on the islet of Palatia stands the gateway and entrance to the remains of the Temple of Apollo. Its massive marble doorway measures about 46 feet across. Dating back to 6th century BC, it’s among Greece’s oldest temples, making it a significant cultural and historical site. Dedicated to the god of light, music, and prophecy, it holds religious importance in Greek mythology. The temple remains are a testament to ancient civilization. Also we heard it was a popular spot to watch the sunset.

After we ate a delicious lunch, we wandered down alongside the water, and took a walk along the beach. It was especially relaxing walking in the sand after all our trekking. Imagining the prospect of renting one of the beachfront properties and returning for an extended stay was dreamy!

DAY 7) A beautiful trekking day to end our trip, through the valley of Tragea. I’ll never forget this day…. it felt so serene and peaceful. It’s known for its ancient olive and citrus groves. I sampled a piece of Loquat. Obviously it was very tasty and a quick pick-me-up. We hiked to a monumental statue with an incredible history, KOUROS, from the 5th century. Despite bearing the marks of time and transportation, it now rests peacefully in the Melanes Valley. The preservation of it was incredible. It weighs over 80 tons, made of Naxian marble, and measures about 35 feet long. Also along the way we saw charming villages and historic churches as well as enjoying the perfect weather.

DAY 8) We traveled by ferry back to Rafina, about four hours. My last sleep was back in the Hotel Avra. We were treated to a lovely evening of site seeing and dinner with our guide, Thanno. He was incredible, and so conscientious of our needs throughout our trip. The first couple of days I was there, he went and bought me a cable I was missing to charge my computer. Talk about impeccable service! The Acropolis sitting high atop the hill overlooking Athens was spectacular! I was able to visit there when I came the first time almost five years ago. What a gorgeous sight.
