A Mother’s Love

Happy Mother’s Day! This day…..it can be everything from delightful to depressing, from stressful to relaxing, from exciting to complete dread. Years ago one of my friends told me about how she hated Mother’s Day. She dreaded it each year, and was always glad when it was over. She was a stepmom and hated the pressure that that put on her. I’ve never been a stepmom, but I could see how it would be very hard in that role. The expectation of who she should be, and perhaps trying to keep up with the real mother, would be overwhelming! Out of all the holidays, I think Mother’s Day can be the hardest when it comes to “expectations”.

Of course on this day, we all want it to be “perfect”, which for me would be to spend it with all of my children and grandchildren. There’s nothing in this world better, than to see all of your children together having fun…..nothing. That is a MOTHER’S LOVE. A mother’s love is like no other, I believe. I dreamed as a little girl of being a mother. I had dolls and I took care of them like real people. All I wanted was to hurry and get out of high school so I could get married and have babies. I loved taking care of my little boys. I had what I had always wanted and was so happy staying home raising them. My love for them was never-ending, and still is!

My own mother’s love is so solid. She has spent years and years and years raising her family of ten children! Now at 83 years old, she is LOVINGLY and SO SWEETLY caring for my dad who is dealing with cancer. She made the statement to me the other night, that it makes her so happy to see her kids doing things together! The love of a mother is undeniable! That saying of “a mother’s instinct” is so true! I always have to smile to myself when my mom calls at just the right time, to remind me of something, to encourage me, or to just listen. It’s truly amazing!

And then there’s the LOVE I see in each of the mother’s of my grandchildren. Each one has been dedicated to their children. They have taught them to be honest and good. Each one has gone through hard things with grace, which is a powerful example to their children. This is a great blessing to me!

If you’re one who struggles on this day, I hope you can somehow find some JOY today. If you don’t have any children, know that you are a MOTHER regardless. Whether it be a niece or nephew, a friend’s child, or perhaps a student….your impact on them will never be forgotten. The world needs good mothers and examples like you!
