WHAT NOT TO DO AFTER 50
Ladies, at the age of 65, I’m more aware than ever of my body as it relates to style! What worked in my 40s and 50s probably doesn’t work now, and that’s ok. With that in mind, here are 10 THINGS NOT TO DO AFTER 50 if you want to look polished, current, and feel your most confident!
ONE- Wearing see-through and thin fabrics! This can reveal more than you intend, and look super tacky! Opt for quality materials that offer coverage, which will make you feel confident! I have all three below, and they all cover!
TWO- Cling to your High School hair style. What worked at 17 likely won’t work now. A modern, fresh cut…. even the most subtle tweak, can make a world of difference! I’m working towards the top left!
THREE- Dressing in only black and white. While this is a classic, a wardrobe of just black and white…. really just all neutrals, can literally wash you out. Don’t be afraid to experiment with color up near your face. It really will bring warmth and life to your look. The outfit below is a darling look using COLOR!
FOUR- Wearing clothes that are too tight. Just because it zips, doesn’t mean it fits. Wearing pieces that hug too tightly will not only feel uncomfortable, but look uncomfortable and unflattering. These below have a fabulous fit….. comfy but still give you shape.
FIVE- Sticking to the same style forever. If your wardrobe hasn’t changed in 15 years, it might be time to REFRESH! Small updates can modernize your whole look! While having a signature look is great, fashion evolves! Not only will wearing the same cuts, colors, or brands make you appear stuck in the past, but it’s simply not fun! Try a new jean silhouette (or color), a fresh shoe style, or a current piece of jewelry. Indeed, it will breathe new life into your closet. The look below are classic styles, but again…. look what the color does. This is a great way to spice things up.
SIX- Ignoring proportions. Undoubtedly, wearing all loose or all tight pieces throws off balance. Pair flowy with fitted for a more flattering silhouette. Think a fitted top, loose on bottom, and vice-versa. Examples of this are here…. first is looser top (I would half-tuck), fitted bottom. Second is looser bottom and more fitted top (tuck).
SEVEN- Makeup that’s outdated. This is another thing you can change up for an INSTANT update. Dark lip-liner with pale lipstick…. NO! Heavy foundation in the wrong color…. NO! Too much makeup…. NO! Time to simplify. Go for fresh, glowy skin and soft neutrals that ENHANCE, not age. My go-to products for an everyday fresh face look, are these….
EIGHT- Next would be using the same skincare you did 20 years ago. Besides your skin aging, it changes. Upgrade your routine with nourishing, age-appropriate products! I LOVE THIS LINE! Most importantly, is that you are consistent with your skincare routine.
NINE- Saving special pieces for “later”. Wear the nice dress, the statement jewelry, the fun heels…. NOW! Life’s too short to save style for someday! I just ordered THIS SKIRT and it’s on its way. Even though it’s a bit expensive, I’ll certainly NOT SAVE it! So many ways to style it….. a tee shirt will probably be my favorite!
TEN- Wearing all the trends at once. One word…. TACKY. Piling them on all at once will definitely look chaotic and like your trying to be younger than you are. Choose ONE trendy piece and keep the rest timeless. Below, I’ve styled a pair of trendy barrel jeans, with very classic pieces.
I recently posted this quote….
Certainly, you don’t need a complete overhaul. Instead, start with a few small updates…. perhaps a modern pair of jeans, a current shoe trend, or a fresh accessory. These little changes can instantly elevate your entire look. In the end, updating your wardrobe isn’t about chasing every trend, it’s about staying current while still feeling like you! Without a doubt, age isn’t something to hide…. it’s something to own! Tell me what you do to stay current!!!
