THE SEVEN-POINT OUTFIT METHOD | A FRESH WAY TO DRESS WITH BALANCE AND STYLE
I’ll be honest here….. I had never heard of the Seven-Point Method until just recently. But as soon as I came across it, I was intrigued. My job is to help women feel confident and inspired, so I knew I had to share this simple approach with you.
WHAT IS THE SEVEN-POINT METHOD?
The Seven-Point Method is a style strategy that helps create balance in your outfits. The concept is simple…. each accessory or detail you add to your outfit is worth one point. Your goal is to fall between 7 and 10 points. By details I mean, statement earrings, a colorful necklace, a scarf, hat, some bold shoes, a belt, and sunnies. Here’s where it gets interesting. Clothing CAN count, but only if it’s a standout piece. A plain tee? Zero points. But a vibrant dress, a bold print blouse, or a statement coat? That’s worth a point, or even two if it’s a showstopper.
I pulled my images from my archives of 2022, for this blog. In each picture I didn’t quite make the seven points, but some of them I got close. In the picture above, I’m counting pants (1), shoes (1), sunnies (1), earrings (1), bracelets (1), and hat (1). Adding in a bag would make seven. Below, I hit five points, and would add in a simple bag and bracelets to make seven.
WHY IT MATTERS FOR WOMEN
How many times have you stood in front of the mirror wondering if your outfit had “too much going on”? That’s where this method can really help guide you. It gives you a simple way to gauge your look, so your personal style feels intentional and polished. It’s not about following rules…. it’s about feeling empowered to express yourself without the stress.
Below I would say I hit six points…. faux-leather skirt, patent booties, bright yellow sweater, velvet bracelet, scarf, statement earrings. I would just need some great sunnies and I’ve hit seven!
HOW TO USE IT
ONE – Start with your base. Does anything stand out? A printed top, or a bright colored pair of pants, or what about an interesting scarf? Basics like jeans or a neutral top do not count.
TWO – Layer thoughtfully. Each accessory or bold detail counts as one point. All of these add up.
THREE – Mix statement pieces with subtle touches. A bold necklace (1), patterned shoes (1), hat (1), and red lipstick (1). This is 4 points, leaving space for softer touches without feeling overdone. Take a look at the picture below….. the pants, shoes, and sweater are three points, possibly four because of the very bold print. For the rest I would add subtle pieces of jewelry and conservative sunnies.
FOUR – Step back, check the mirror, and ask yourself if your look feels balanced?
WOULD YOU USE THIS AT HOME?
Honestly, this method isn’t just for dressing up or heading out. It CAN be used for everyday style too. Even if you’re staying home, a touch of balance can make you feel more put together, which often boosts your mood and productivity. Think possibly about a cute headband (1), some comfy but chic slippers (1), some pretty lipgloss (1), or some colorful stud earrings (1). You don’t need to hit ALL seven points every day, but a few can make you feel polished without spending too much time getting there.
