OUTDATED TRENDS THAT AGE YOU – AND WHAT TO WEAR INSTEAD

Outdated Trends That Age You - And What To Wear Instead

I love sitting in public spaces and people-watch. Noticing things about how they look and dress, truly inspire me. But I also think of simple changes people could do to make a huge difference to improve their overall look….. like a hairstyle or different shoes.

As we go through midlife, our style evolves…. and it absolutely should. But sometimes, without even realizing it, we hold onto habits or mindsets, that just don’t work anymore. I don’t think you need to chase trends necessarily, but the goal is to look current, confident, and of course CHIC!

In this blog post, I’m talking about the MOST OUTDATED TRENDS women are talking about right now…. and what to do instead.

Heavy foundation, thick eyeliner, and overly matte finishes can settle into fine lines and actually emphasize aging.

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD….. opt for lighter, hydrating formulas. Cream-based products make such a difference. I stay away from powders, except some eye shadows. I’ve even found creamy shadows that I love. Know your colors too. I also use a setting spray and love using it to freshen things up later in the day or evening. What I’m currently using…..

I constantly see this one…. clothes that are too tight. Forget the size, and instead go for how they fit your shape. Too loose can feel shapeless, but can be done if you’re remembering proportions. But both can unintentionally add years, and who wants that?

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD….. focus on tailoring, structure, and balance. Clothes that skim your body, not cling or drown, changes everything about the way you look. I’ve started to experience the over-hang in the back, and have had to get really selective on the fits and even the color. Light colors will show everything back there, especially if they’re too tight!

This is a big one in my opinion. The same cut and color year after year can feel dated, even if it once worked beautifully.

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD…. update your style subtly. Softer layers, a new color, or even a fresh length can bring you current. Find a stylist that comes with good recommendations and that you like….. her expertise will be invaluable!

This is another thing that can make a world of difference. Certain shades can wash you out or make your complexion appear dull.

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD….. lean into colors that brighten your skin, warm neutrals, soft whites, rich tones, or whatever enhances YOUR skin. I’ve said so many times to go to a department store makeup counter and let them help you see and feel the makeup on. That’s what they are there for.

Too many bold pieces at once can feel overwhelming and outdated, and like you’re trying too hard.

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD….. choose one or two statement pieces and keep the rest minimal. CHIC is often about restraint. For me I’ll do either bold earrings-small necklace, or chunky necklace-small stud earrings. Lately I’ve been wearing lots of rings, a big trend right now. I’ll usually not wear bracelets when I have a bunch of rings on my fingers. These pieces linked, are exactly what I’d choose.

Psssst….. I see it all the time! Old cuts, overly embellished (the worst), or ill-fitting silhouettes, WILL instantly date you.

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD…… look for modern, flattering styles like straight-let, bootcut, barrel style, or tailored wide-leg jeans in clean washes. Another tip is if your denim is super trendy (maybe the barrel type), style them with something more conservative and simple. I’ve linked some great current styles below.

Both extremes… doing too little or trying everything, can impact how your skin looks and feels.

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD….. keep it simple and consistent. I always tell my people that consistency is the most important. Hydration, SPF, and a few targeted products depending on your skin. Linked below are the products I use most on my skin, depending on what it needs. IMAGE is my preferred brand.

Clunky or overly trendy shoes from years past can throw off an otherwise great outfit.

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD….. invest in timeless styles, sleek sneakers, classic flats, comfortable heels, that complement your outfits. I always have several pairs of nude or neutral shoes. They are the ones that I go to first. Below are several great examples.

Sticking only to basics or avoiding anything new can unintentionally age your style.

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD….. incorporate small updates. A new silhouette or color, texture, or accessory will keep your look current without you leaving your comfort zone. Below is a great example of an outfit that’s conservative, but still current. The high-rise jeans (worn with a belt), a classic linen button-down (but colorful), a tiny bit of pop with the earrings, and a classic block heel shoe (that happens to be affordable and just like the big name brands!).

Nothing ages you faster than feeling unsure in what you’re doing.

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD….. wear what makes you feel good, period. Confidence, posture, and presence will always be more powerful than any trend. It’s really very powerful!

The conversation today isn’t about “anti-aging”…. it’s about PRO-AGING, and doing it with intention. Women over 50 are redefining style, embracing confidence, and showing that style only gets better with time. These small updates will make a big difference, and the goal is always the same: TO BE THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF!
