MY NON-NEGOTIABLE HEALTH HABITS

Recently, I’ve watched a couple of friends struggling with some really serious health challenges. It’s been a powerful reminder to me….. good health is NOT something to take for granted. We don’t always get a second chance to go back and undo years of neglect. ANYTHING you can do to take better care of yourself is worth it!!!

I’ve always paid attention to my health—it’s been a priority for as long as I can remember. But the older I get, the more I realize just how important those habits have been. I’m 65 now, and I can honestly say that if I don’t stay on top of my health, I feel horrible—and I can’t stand the way that makes me feel. Over the years, I’ve tweaked, adjusted, and experimented with what works best for me. From what I eat, to how I move my body, to how much water I drink and how well I sleep… I’ve learned that balance is everything. If I let any of these five things slide, I’m almost guaranteed a migraine. These are the habits that keep me feeling strong, happy, and sane.

SLEEP – I’m lucky that I can sleep anywhere. But getting the hours in that I should, is vital. This is about the only time I can slow down, be still, and reset. Seven to nine hours is what’s recommended. THESE SILKY PILLOWCASES are wonderful….. they are so comfy and better for your face too! And these are the LINEN SHEETS I use on my bed and have come to love them more than I do cotton sheets.

WATER – Drinking enough water is about the easiest thing you can do to help you feel your best from the inside out. There is a noticeable difference in how my skin looks, when I’m hydrated. I aim for eight glasses a day, not including any other sources, such as milk. Another perk is better digestion!

EXERCISE – You know I’m big on exercise and it’s definitely my therapy! It keeps me grounded, happy, and confident in my body. Lately it looks a bit different, but I’m always 100% focused on moving! Related blog is HERE.

SUGAR – I don’t cut sugar out completely, but very mindful of it. Too much of it throws me off physically AND emotionally. At this stage in my life…… it just isn’t worth it. My weakness is my DARK CHOCOLATE ALMONDS, of which I have about five or six about mid-day. That’s enough for me to get a taste and feel satisfied.

MY NON-NEGOTIABLE HEALTH HABITS

FIBER – Fiber to me is definitely my “hero”. I’ve been aware of how fiber affects my body nearly my whole adult life. According to the USDA, we should work towards getting about 25 grams per day. I have THIS CEREAL every morning. In addition to 18g of fiber, it also has 3g of protein, and 0 sugar! I have it with lots fresh berries and walnuts, along with fresh veggies for dinner.
