HOW TO DECLUTTER YOUR CLOSET

If you’re anything like me, getting rid of clothes isn’t always easy. Sometimes it has nothing to do with whether I wear something. I get attached sometimes to what I paid for it, or I remember buying it in some exotic location while traveling. Suddenly, getting rid of a top becomes much harder than it should be!

But here’s the thing….. I’m learning the money has already been spent, and the memory doesn’t live in the clothing. I’m getting better at knowing I can keep the memory without keeping every piece of clothing that comes with it. This idea has been SO HELPFUL to me!

HOW TO DECLUTTER YOUR CLOSET

When you’re ready to thin out your closet, start by looking at what you wear regularly. And you’ve got to be VERY HONEST! I start by making three piles: KEEP, DONATE, and LET GO. Start with the definite no’s. These are the pieces that don’t fit, don’t flatter, are worn out, or simply aren’t your style anymore.

Next, gather the clothes that are still in good condition but you no longer wear. They say if it’s been over a year since you’ve worn it, then get rid of it. I actually don’t follow that rule and have worn things I’ve had for years and years. But these things would go in your DONATE pile so someone else can enjoy them.

Finally, your KEEP pile is for the pieces you wear regularly, and feel confident in. If you’re struggling to decide where something belongs, ask yourself: Would I buy this today? Does it fit my current lifestyle? Can I style it in a least three different ways? If the answer is no, it may be time to let it go. Your closet should work for the life you’re living NOW!

And while you’re at it, don’t forget about your accessories and drawers! Jewelry, scarves, belts, handbags, and sunglasses can pile up before you even realize it. Take some time to go through these things too, keeping what you love and can visualize lots of ways to wear it. It’s important not to feel like you have to tackle everything at once. Sometimes organizing just ONE drawer can be SO satisfying! It’s amazing how good it feels to open a drawer and actually see what’s inside instead of digging through everything. Plus, those little accomplishments can motivate you to keep going!

If you’re holding on to something because of a special trip or a big investment, give yourself permission to let it go. Take a photo if the memory is important to you. If it’s an expensive piece, consider reselling it or donating it to someone who will enjoy it. As I said above, you don’t have to do it all in one day. Whenever I go through and purge, it’s never in one day. I start with one section, one drawer, and sometimes even just ten pieces. The hardest part is starting….. sort of like exercising!

A smaller, more intentional wardrobe makes getting dressed easier. You can see what you own, create more outfits, and appreciate the pieces you truly love. I honestly would love that, but somehow I manage to fill up every closet in my home.

The goal isn’t to have the smallest closet. It’s to have a closet full of clothes that work for you, reflect your style, and make you feel confident. Learning how to declutter your closet is actually so liberating!!! Keep what you love wearing, release what you don’t, and make room for what’s next.
