CELEBRITY CRUISES | GREECE TURKEY ITALY

SAILING THE MEDITERRANEAN ON CELEBRITY ASCENT
My Celebrity Cruise aboard the Ascent a couple of months back, was nothing short of incredible! I’ve been so fortunate to travel with Celebrity Cruises all of last year. Each trip has been truly, unforgettable. I’m so convinced that cruising is the way to see the world, if you want convenience and ease. Unpack and set up once (in beautiful accommodations I might add), and then explore!

I traveled with my bestie SheShe, and together we’ve been to so many places throughout the world. This journey through Greece, Turkey, and Italy was spectacular, just as I knew it would be. Celebrity continues to redefine luxury travel, and this sailing proved exactly why I love exploring the world with them.

DEPARTURE FROM ROME
Rome was our starting point, where we spent our first day wandering the city. We made our way to the Trevi Fountain, only to find it completely turned off while they collected the coins! I’ve been many times, and didn’t even know they did that, which happens a couple of times each week. After that, we shopped and found the most fun coordinating dresses at a little shop just across from the fountain….. one of those travel wins! Rome never loses its magic, and no matter how many times I return, it always feels exciting!

____________
BEAUTIFUL CRETE
Crete is so dreamy! We spent the day exploring the charming seaside town, wandering along the waterfront, popping in and out of local shops. Excited to find matching patchwork bucket hats, a fun souvenir that has since then, been my go-to hat. We enjoyed a delicious Greek lunch by the water, soaking in the laid-back island vibe. Beyond its beauty, Crete is rich in history…. it’s the largest Greek island and is considered the birthplace of Europe’s oldest civilization, the Minoans. The island is also know for its Mediterranean diet, and often ranked among the healthiest in the world. We couldn’t leave without first getting some gelato….. I mean after all, we’re in Europe!

____________
EPHESUS, TURKEY
Our first day in Türkiye (pronounced Tur-kee-yeh, adopted in 2024) began in Kusadasi with a guided visit to the ancient city of Ephesus. As our guide taught us, even their everyday language reflects the culture. Thank you sounds like “tea-sugar-dream.” I thought that was an interesting tidbit. Much of life here revolves around tourism, fishing, and agriculture: olives and tangerines are harvested in winter, figs in the summer, and olive oil (once used only for lighting before the people discovered how delicious it was) remains central to their daily diets.
Türkiye is about the size of Texas, and another interesting fact, is that it sits in both Asia and Europe. Women play an important role in supporting their families through carpet weaving. The government even builds trade schools to encourage young girls to learn this art. With a certificate they can work from home. Visiting the rug factory was really fun. Such a presentation and GORGEOUS pieces! These intricate carpets can have up to 2,500 knots per inch. Fascinating to watch!

Walking through Ephesus was like stepping into a history book, and only about 15% of the city has been uncovered so far. The city was carefully planned…. the upper town served government functions, while downtown was the center of social life. Public baths were designed to prevent disease, and the amphitheater was for the wealthy and seated about 1,400 people. We passed through a narrow red gate, deliberately built to block chariots so visitors would enter on foot, out of respect. It was fun to actually walk through this gate (sorry no picture).

The section of Ephesus that is currently protected by these large canvas roofed coverings is know as the Terrace Houses (also known as the “Houses of the Rich”). This area contains well-preserved Roman homes with mosaic floors, wall paintings, and heating systems, that give archaeologists detailed information about how wealthy residents lived back then. Excavations and conservation work continue there today, allowing researchers to study the structure of the city and daily life in the Roman period….. all while protecting the fragile remains from weather and damage.

____________
ISTANBUL, TURKEY
My visit to Istanbul was a dream come true. I’m so happy I got to go and experience this part of the world. With a population of nearly sixteen million, it is one of the most populated cities in the world. Once called Constantinople and settled by Constantine, Istanbul is now known for its skyline filled with more than 3,000 mosques. As we crossed the bridge toward the old city and looked over the Golden Horn, the scale and history of the city became very real. From the imperial balcony, we could clearly see both Asia and Europe at the same time…. an incredible view that showed how unique Istanbul’s location truly is.

In Istanbul, women are required to cover their heads when entering active mosques as a sign of respect for the religious setting. This applies to visitors as well as worshippers. Many major mosques provide free or very inexpensive headscarves at the entrance, and in some cases simply pulling up the hood of a jacket or coat is considered acceptable.
Hagia Sophia is one of the most remarkable spaces in the world because it reflects nearly 1,500 years of history. Today it is know as a mosque, yet it still welcomes visitors to experience its beauty. My favorite part was looking up at the incredible views inside, and it was especially beautiful at night!

The TOPKAPI PALACE was interesting too. It’s located right next to Hagi Sophia and houses many important historical and religious artifacts. One of the most famous items displayed there is a sword traditionally associated with David and Goliath from the Bible.

One of the highlights in Istanbul was visiting the GRAND BAZAAR, originally built in 1461 and now home to about 4,000 shops. It’s filled with jewelry, carpets, ceramics, Turkish Delight, and even calligraphy that reflect Turkey’s long artistic tradition. The bazaar feels vibrant and full of life. Note: I’ve always wanted to taste Turkish Delight, and it did not disappoint! I even brought a box home with me.

____________
MYKONOS, GREECE
Unlike anywhere else, there’s just something about Greece that I adore. It might be my favorite destination (right up there with Italy). We spent the day wandering the charming streets on our own, going in between whitewashed buildings and pops of bright bougainvillea. The iconic white and blue isn’t just beautiful….. it reflects the sun to keep homes cool and mirrors the colors of the sea and sky, a tradition rooted in both practicality and pride. It’s a photographer’s dream…. truly Greece is so beautiful!

____________
PERFECT DAY IN SANTORINI

Our day in Santorini was unforgettable from the very start. The donkey ride up to the top was hilarious…. I had never done that before and it is absolutely a MUST DO! The donkeys follow the trail…. but in their own criss-cross kind of way. They go wherever they want, and you seriously just hold on and enjoy the ride. I honestly can’t remember the last time I had that much exhilarating fun! SheShe worked her magic negotiating a price for us (and did a dang good job getting us a deal!), which without a doubt made the adventure even better.

When we reached the top, we just basically took in the breathtaking views of the caldera and the Aegean Sea. A tiny bit of rain came through that we had to dodge, but somehow it made the day feel even more magical. We found the most charming little restaurant perched right on the cliffs overlooking the water. They brought us cozy blankets to snuggle up in while we enjoyed delicious food and hot drinks, soaking in the ambiance. We took photos and videos, wandered through little shops, and savored every moment. It was simple, a little wild, and absolutely perfect in my eyes….. one of my favorite days ever in Santorini!!

____________
SORRENTO AND THE AMALFI COAST

In Sorrento, we spent time just roaming the streets, and everywhere we turned it was lemon…. lemon candies, lemon soaps, lemon pastries, lemon ceramics, and of course the famous limoncello, which is the local liquor. I happily opted for some gelato instead, while SheShe tried the limoncello and said it was a ZINGER!!!

The drive along the Amalfi Coast was breathtaking… winding roads carved into dramatic village cliffs with the Mediterranean stretching beside us. It’s known to be the most beautiful coastline in all the world. If you have a tendency to get carsick, bring what you need, because it’s very windy and narrow! Between the legendary “Land of the Mermaids,” the unforgettable flavors (because in Italy, the pizza, mozzarella, and olive oil are done differently and unique to Italy), and the joy of strolling through the streets…… this stretch of coastline felt like pure Italian bliss!

____________
CULINARY EXCELLENCE ABOARD ASCENT

One of the things I love most about Celebrity Cruises, is that the food is truly a ten out of ten….. and aboard the Ascent, they absolutely outdid themselves. From the elegant French cuisine at Le Voyage to the multi-sensory experience at Le Petit Chef, and the Mediterranean-inspired menu at Cyprus….. every meal felt extra! Fine dining at Fine Cut Steakhouse was delicious, and our meals at my favorite, Eden, felt so special. As well as this, the main dining venues offer crafted menus with fresh ingredients, incredible variety, and plenty of made-to-order options. Dining was a highlight all on its own. Add in world-class entertainment, and every evening felt so elevated. And the service? Absolutely top-notch!

____________
DAYS AT SEA

Indeed sea days are always heavenly….. that perfect balance of nothing to do and absolutely everything to do aboard the Celebrity Ascent. From spa days and afternoons soaking up the warm sunshine on deck, to a little onboard shopping and even catching up on work, it’s the kind of day I crave. My cabin’s beautiful balcony often became my “office”, with ocean views, sea breeze, lattes…. an especially beautiful workspace.
Beyond that, sea days are filled with fitness classes, cooking demonstrations, art auctions, live music, trivia games, and of course endless dining options. Whether you want total relaxation or a full schedule of activities, it’s never boring…. just beautifully unhurried!
____________
BEHIND THE SCENES AT SEA
Stepping onto the bridge…. the ship’s command center, was such a highlight. Not only seeing firsthand where the captain and officers navigate the open sea, but the appreciation you gain for their work is amazing.

Wow, we are headed on an Oceania cruise next month, our favorite cruise line. My husband and I are going to Santorini Greece and a few other places. then headed to Turkey and Italy. Have been to Rome and many places. Our favorite stop more than once is Florence. They actually engraved a handbag I bought there with my initials. Why in the world is the Trevi fountain empty? We were able to toss our coins in it when we were there. Are they refurbishing it?
Not sure if you’ve been to Barcelona Spain because it is also fabulous. The architecture is unbelievable. If you haven’t been, make sure you purchase tickets to La Sagrada Família before going as you won’t be able to get in, if you don’t.
