THE SEVEN-POINT OUTFIT METHOD | A FRESH WAY TO DRESS WITH BALANCE AND STYLE

This is one of my most popular style posts from last year, and I thought it was worth bringing back with updated links and a fresh look. If you missed it the first time, I hope you find it just as helpful!

I’ll be honest….. I had never heard of the Seven-Point Method until just recently. But as soon as I came across it, I was intrigued. My job is to help women feel confident and inspired, so I knew I had to share this simple approach with you.

The Seven-Point Outfit Method is a styling strategy that helps create outfits that feel balanced, polished, and intentionally put together. The concept is simple…. each accessory or interesting detail you add to your outfit is worth one point. Your goal is to land somewhere between 7 and 10 points. By details, I mean things like statement earrings, a colorful necklace, a scarf, a hat, bold shoes, a belt, sunnies, or a handbag. Here’s where it gets interesting: your clothing can count too….. but only if it’s a standout piece. A basic white tee or basic pants don’t count. But a vibrant sweater, a blouse with lace details or bold print, striped pants, a colorful dress, or a statement coat can each earn one or even two points if they become the focal point of the outfit.

Certainly the idea isn’t to wear more…. it’s to wear with intention. By thoughtfully combining a few standout pieces and accessories, you create an outfit that feels complete without looking overdone.

In the picture above, I’m counting pants (2), shoes (1), sunnies (1), earrings (1), bracelets (1), and hat (1), for a total of seven. Adding in a bag would then make eight. Below, I hit all seven points. Pants (2), sweater (1), hat (1), sunnies (1), shoes (1), and necklace (1).

THE SEVEN-POINT OUTFIT METHOD

How many times have you stood in front of the mirror wondering if your outfit had “too much going on”? That’s where this method can really help guide you. It gives you a simple way to gauge your look, so your personal style feels intentional and polished. It’s all about feeling like you can express yourself but without the stress.

Below I hit all seven points. Skirt (2), top (1), sunnies (1), bag (1), sandals (1), and earrings (1).

THE SEVEN-POINT OUTFIT METHOD

ONE – Start with your base. Does anything stand out? A printed top, or a bright colored pair of pants, or what about an interesting scarf? Basics like jeans or a neutral top do not count.

TWO – Layer thoughtfully. Each accessory or bold detail counts as one point. All of these add up.

THREE – Mix statement pieces with subtle touches. A bold necklace (1), patterned shoes (1), hat (1), and red lipstick (1). This is four points, leaving space for softer touches without feeling overdone.

Take a look at the picture below….. this outfit gets there beautifully. I’m counting these statement pants as two points because the bold print is the star of the outfit. Add the colorful necklace, geometric earrings, gold bracelets, woven tote, and I think the subtle pointelle texture of the top deserves a point too. Normally I wouldn’t count a pointelle knit, but in this case I think it adds just enough interest to earn one. What do you think….. would you count it?

FOUR – Step back, check the mirror, and ask yourself if your look feels balanced?

Honestly, this method isn’t just for dressing up or heading out. It CAN be used for everyday style too. Even if you’re staying home, a touch of balance can make you feel more put together, which often boosts your mood and productivity. Think about some fun palazzo pants (I’m wearing THESE right now, worth 2), some comfy but chic SLIPPERS (1), some pretty LIPGLOSS (1), or some colorful stud EARRINGS (1). You don’t need to hit ALL seven points every day, but a few can make you feel polished without spending too much time getting there.

Since hearing about this, it really has helped me think more about putting my day-to-day looks together. It pushes you out of your little box, and helps you think differently. This idea will definitely give you another tool, when putting yourself together and feeling your absolute best!

I should note that some of the outfit images in this post are AI-generated visualizations to help illustrate styling ideas and show how the pieces might look together.

  1. Way back in the late 80s when I was at FIDM, one of my instructors talked about the seven point method, believe me it’s nothing new, I think it’s just coming back around, albeit a bit different this time, back then each piece of clothing counted as one point as did accessories, the objective was to not go over seven – and honestly all these years later I still use that when I’m getting dressed and often will take an item off (outer-ware, stockings because we wore them back then, your purse & wedding rings don’t count)

    1. Hi Rilynne….. thanks for your comment. Even when I was researching this, there were several opinions as to what it actually was. But I think still very effective especially for those who struggle with putting things together. I’ve thought a lot about since writing this blog, even though I kind of go back to the norm for me. Thanks for stopping by and have a WONDERFUL week! Take care! XOXO
