MIDLIFE FASHION MISTAKES TO AVOID
Fashion is a powerful tool that can make you feel confident, bold, and beautiful at any age. However, as we step into midlife, it’s important to refine our style in a way that complements our changing bodies and lifestyles….. all while embracing individuality.
We all know, there are no hard and fast rules. Style is personal, and what makes you feel confident should always be your guiding force. However, I believe there are some considerations to keep in mind if you want to maintain a polished, classy appearance. It’s about finding the balance between expressing your unique personality and wearing pieces that complement your age, body shape, and lifestyle.
EIGHT THINGS TO AVOID TO STAY FASHIONABLE
TOO BARE. Overly revealing outfits might undermine the refined style that comes with age. Showing one area, like your neckline or shoulders, creates a sophisticated balance. But too low, too high, too bare….. isn’t a good look, no matter. BELOW are beautiful examples of how to bare all, tastefully.
WEARING UNFLATTERING SILHOUETTES. Understanding what styles complement your body shape is KEY to feeling and looking your best! It will make a world of difference!!! Polished is what you want to go for. Wrap or column dresses, A-line silhouettes, high-rise straight leg jeans, loose but fitted tops, and soft wide-leg pants all flatter every body shape.
CHASING EVERY TREND! Even though I love trends….. it’s wise to think about not wearing too many at once. Choose one and mix it into more classic looks overall. Also important to make sure they flatter your body. See BELOW two outfits…. the very trendy WIDE-CUFF JEAN and the BOW trend. I’ve styled each look conservatively, not mixing in a bunch of other trends.
WEARING TOO MUCH MAKEUP. Less is more I believe. Go for a more natural look that enhances your features and skin tone. Most men will like this look much better than a lot of heavy makeup. Below are my go-to makeup products I’ve worn for years.
OUTDATED HAIR. I see this often! Our hair plays a huge role in our identity, and it’s easy to fall into the trap of sticking with the same hairstyle we had decades ago. Don’t be afraid to mix it up! Ask your stylist for fresh ideas, browse pictures for inspiration, or even try a wig from THE WIG COMPANY, like I did here…
OVERLOADING ACCESSORIES. Some women like this, but personally I like either/or. Sticking with one statement piece to avoid looking cluttered is a smart way to go. Bold earrings, OR a BOLD necklace….. not both.
WEARING TOO HIGH OF HEELS. Indeed this can look unbalanced and even a bit tacky. Instead of adding glamour, they can make your outfit appear less put together and draw attention for the wrong reasons. Opt for heels that offer both style and comfort, giving you confidence without sacrificing elegance. The kitten-heel is a BEAUTIFUL choice! See some FAVORITES here….
LACK OF CONFIDENCE. The most important fashion guideline is wearing what makes you feel amazing. Your confidence is your best accessory!!!
____________
At midlife, it’s important to avoid common style pitfalls that can detract from your overall look. Wearing too much makeup or heels that are too high can come off as trying too hard, while an outdated hairstyle or lack of confidence can make you appear frumpy. Overloading on accessories or chasing too many trends can lead to a cluttered look, while dressing too bare or in unflattering silhouettes can be unflattering as well as inappropriate. Striking a balance with modern, flattering choices that enhance your confidence is key to maintaining a CHIC and timeless style.
Your advice is right on! I still wear make-up at 75. Fortunately I inherited great skin, moisturized since age 20, wore sun screen, and did not smoke. I barely have a wrinkle. I quit wearing eyeliner ( just didn’t think it looked right on me) and only wear neutral eyeshadow with mascara. I absolutely hate vivid eyeshadow on women over 60! You always look terrific!
Kathy I LOVE that you know what works for you! That is more than half the battle I feel for women our age. BRAVO and thank you so much for chiming in! Have a WONDERFUL week! XOXO
Very useful – thank you! 🙂
You are welcome Tina. Thank you for stopping by and have a GREAT WEEK! Xoxoxo
I really like the skirt. I also really like the wig, because I’m not a fan of short hair. Mine is chin length. I believe you’re a shorty like me. I’m 5’2″ and weight 112 pounds.
I live in Sarasota Florida and we are all waiting for Milton to come. We just got done with Helene! We live two blocks from the beach, and had no damage during Helene. They are telling us this is the worst hurricane in 100 years. We are all sick to our stomach waiting for this to be over with. Please pray if you’re able to do for all of us.
Hi Jo…… YES of course I will be praying for you. You’ve been through so much already. Take care and know that PRAYERS are coming your way! Thank you for dropping by and let me know how everything goes!!!! XOXO
