HOW TO TRANSITION TO SPRING

how to transition to spring

Spring can feel a little confusing when it comes to getting dressed. One day you’re craving bright colors and lighter layers, and the next you’re reaching for your coziest sweater because the air is still chilly. The good news? You don’t have to choose between staying warm and dressing for the season. With a few thoughtful tweaks…… starting with color, layers, and smart fabric choices, you can ease into spring fashion while still feeling comfortable, confident, and completely put together.

My look above is a great example of transitioning into spring. I’m wearing a black sweater that I’ve worn all winter, some black and white print pants and white shoes. For an outer layer, I’d choose a WHITE JACKET, a LIGHT TAN SUEDE JACKET, or even a LINED DENIM JACKET.

Spring dressing doesn’t mean abandoning warmth…. it just means changing your palette. Soft pastels, creamy neutrals, fresh greens, light blues, and cheerful florals instantly say “spring”, even when temperatures are still cool. A cozy sweater or jacket in a spring color feels lighter and more seasonal than darker winter hues, while still keeping you warm. The color palette below is a great way to visualize spring styling.

Layers are your best friend during early spring. Start with a lightweight base like a cotton tee or fitted long sleeve, then add a cardigan, soft knit sweater, or light jacket. The goal is pieces you can easily remove as the day warms up, without sacrificing comfort in the morning chill. You can literally wear four or five light layers, and it’s actually a really fun look. Swap out heavy winter knits for lighter-weight materials that still provide warmth. Think cotton blends, fine-gauge knits such as merino wool or lightweight cashmere, denim, and soft twills. These fabrics are more breathable while still offering enough coverage for cooler temperatures….. perfect for unpredictable spring days.

Accessories do a lot of the seasonal work for you. Trade bulky scarves for lighter wraps, add colorful jewelry, or carry a bright bag to freshen up your look. Even if you’re wearing layers, spring-inspired accessories instantly shift the outfit’s mood.

Closed toe shoes are still a must in early spring. Think about wearing some classic loafers, sneakers, ankle boots, or flats in lighter shades or fresh textures. And think about wearing ankle socks for added warmth. You’ll stay warm while giving your outfit a more spring-forward feel. I’ve always said, “Shoes can change everything!”

You certainly don’t need a brand-new wardrobe. Pair your winter staples….. like sweaters or jackets you’ve been wearing through the winter, but in spring colors. Also, think about lighter denim and playful accessories. This balance keeps outfits practical and perfectly in season. Check out these looks….
